Sports… the Philadelphia way

Phillies Pessimism

You know, it’s great that the Phillies are so capable of coming back from 7 run deficits to win in 13 innings. Really, it makes for great entertainment. I couldn’t have asked for a better game, from the perspective of a fan seeking a thrill.

But let’s be honest. When it comes to the post-season, the teams that win are the teams that are consistent. They are the teams that show up on both sides of the ball, day in and day out. Over the last 3 seasons, though they’ve gotten more exciting to watch, the Phillies have remained inconsistent. They don’t have the consistently dominant pitcher (Hamels, Moyer and Meyers are all susceptible to big innings). They don’t have the consistently dominant offense. How many innings straight did they go recently without a single run?

Until the Phillies get dominant, I’m not holding out any hope for a deep pre-season run. Over a 7 game series, it’s the consistent team that gets rewarded. And while they might surprise us all and get hot for 3 straight series … we shouldn’t be betting on it.
