Win leaves Phillies 0.5 game out of Wildcard lead.
The Good: It’s a good thing Howard got that RBI, or he would have had a bad night. I’m going to say it again. This bullpen pitching like this makes the idea of the Phillies playing in the playoffs a very possible idea. Rowand and Utley going 7-for-10, but only producing 1 RBI. Kinda out. Just thought I’d point that out. Kendrick is absolutely the best pitcher on the team.
The Bad: There is nothing wrong with their game right now. Except for the 2 errors.
Jayson Werth is an unbelievable player. We all know how well his swing has been for the second half of the season. But within the last or so, we’ve seen that he is a very intelligent player as well. The 2 SB’s he took in the 9th inning against the Mets in that epic 4-game home series really demonstrated his knowledge. Grant it, if he was thrown out during either of those attempts, I’d be singing a much different tune. But thet thing is, he takes those chances. I’d much rather lose a run/game from a player being too aggressive then a player being too timid. And once again he demonstrates his balls of steel by going from first to third on a sacrifice bunt. I’m really starting to like this guy and hope that he can be a starter in ‘08 or ‘09.
Hopefully the trouble Hamels had in his last start was due to his recent coming off of the DL. Lasting only 3.0 innings is never a good thing. I hate to throw Hamels under the bus, but he has to put together a good performance. He’s had time since coming off the DL and he needs to take back his position of being the ace of the staff. We’re in a Pennant race and the team leaders have to step it up. This year against the Nationals, Hamels is 1-1 in 3 starts with a 2.84 ERA over 19.0 innings.
Last start (9/18): ND / 3.0 / 3 ER / 5 H / 1 BB / 1 SO / Atlanta
Speaking of only lasting 3.0 innings, Washington starter Joel Hanrahan went 3.1 innings or less in his last 3 starts. In the month of September, Hanrahan’s ERA is 7.47. And in 44.2 innings pitched this year, he has been able to accumulate 33 BB’s. This struggling rookie has his work cut out for him going up against the Phillies who are playing with a purpose.
Last start (9/18): ND / 3.0 / 5 ER / 7 H / 2 BB / 1 SO / New York
Last words . . . I realy enjoyed when Wheeler said the Nationals scorekeeper should get a glove and try to field a ball. As if that momma’s boy has ever played a game himself.
