Meltdown almost costs Phillies the game.
The Good: I like this trend of hitting a grandslam in every game for the rest of the year. I also like the trend they’ve set of winning every game for the rest of the year. Kendrick looks like him old self. Now all we need is Hamels to be anywhere near is old self and we’re in a Pennant race. Aaron Rowand’s new name = Mr. Clutch. He pretty much single-handedly saved this game.
The Bad: I just had flashbacks of the Atlanta game during the whole game. Why? Why can’t they just win a game with no string attached. No late inning rally. No complete implosion by the bullpen. No need to stand by the garbage can because I literally felt sick to my stomach watching this game. I just want to be part of a good team. But you know what, a win is a win. And the Mets lost. We’re in a Pennant race!!! (That’s the new theme to my blog.)
Just because Hamels is coming back doesn’t mean that we should all free up all of October for playoff games, but it won’t hurt to leave some dates open. There’s a pretty good chance he’s not going to be the same Hamels that has 14 wins. His pitch count is expected to be around the 60s, which means maybe 5.0 innings if he’s on. While the Phillies have a possible chance of making the playoffs, there’s also a good chance of Cole Hamels being an All-Star for quite a few more years. I’d rather see him take his time instead of rushing back into full form, re-hurt himself, and possibly be out of comission for an even longer time. It’s such a shame to lose him when we did as he was 3-0 in his last 4 starts.
Last start (8/16): W / 6.2 / 0 ER / 4 H / 2 BB / 6 SO / Washington
Starting Game 2 for the Cardinals is . . . a good question. According to the Phillies website, Todd Wellemeyer is supposed to start. But he is to only throw a few innings until Kip Wells takes over. This is what happens when it’s September and you don’t have a good pitching staff. It’s only a matter of time before Antonio Alfonseca starts a game for the Phillies.
Last words . . . Does anyone else think Shane VIctorino’s mohawk is the greatest thing ever? If they make the playoffs, I may do the same thing.
