Sports… the Philadelphia way

E-6, you sunk my battleship.

The Good: I am completely speechless. I know that no matter what I say, I won’t completely describe the awesomeness of what just happened. And I know that I’m going to leave out important plays/players. But I’ll do the best I can. Rollins has completely backed up his trash-talking, and that’s no small task. Besides Dobbs’ huge swing of the bat, all of the RBI’s were spread out over 4 different players. It’s great to see everyone contributing to a win. And for at least one more game, this bullpen did exactly what it had to do.

The Bad: Eaton once again was given a lead to work with, and once again he blew it. He should be taken out after the first 3 innings for each of his starts. The injury bug has struck again with Gordon. It’d be great to get him back before this season ends, but he is far too old. The injuries are only going to come at a more frequent pace, and he needs to just retire before he dies on the field. It’s great to see the Phillies continue to win even with Howard going through another one of his mini-slumps.

The Mets should not be allowed to win the NL East title. Grant it they have a better record, but they have slapped around the field all season along by the Phillies. But the reason the Phillies are in second place looking up is because they play down to the lesser teams. Once again the Phillies are given the proper momentum needed to finish us the season on a very positive note. Besides one more matchup against the Braves, the Phillies are playing scrubs to finish off the year. If history tells us anything, the Phillies will let down their guard and lose some ugly games to the Cadinals and Nationals. But there’s something special about this team. It has to be tough to score runs and constitently have your pitching rotation/bullpen give up that lead. But they go out there, inning after inning, playing as hard as they can, running the bases hard and piling up the hits. All this team needs is a little help from the pitchers and they can sweep a division leader.

It looks like all my prayers paid off. Kyle Kendrick will not miss his start as he will be taking the mound Monday. I think we all remember his last start in which he took a line drive off the leg/knee. While he says he’s OK to go, I’m still going to be a little cautious until he gets a few innings complete. The most impressive number from this kid is his walks total. In 8 of his last 9 starts, he’s allowed 1 or less walks. And in that one other start, he allowed 2 walks. And I actually like the fact that he doesn’t get strikeouts either. He just keeps the ball around the plate and hopes the Phillies bring their defensive game with them. And it doesn’t hurt that the Phillies usually supply him with more then enough runs to get the job done.

Last start (9/12): L / 3.0 / 4 ER / 7 H / 1 BB / 3 SO / Colorado

Starting for the Cardinals will be Brad Thompson.  Less then half of Thompson’s appearances came as starts.  He uses lots of off-speed pitches, such as his change-up, slider, and sinker to keep hitters off balance.  He’s had one start in September, but excluding that, his last start came on July 28th.

Last start (9/9):  ND / 2.0 / 2 ER / 4 H / 0 BB / 1 SO  / Arizona

Last words . . . I have yet to properly comprehend what the Phillies have just done.
