Screw the wildcard, we’re taking the east.
The Good: Werth looking like Ted Williams, Howard starting to heat up, and the bullpen going 2.2 shutout innings. But most importantly, CHASE UTLEY is once again showing that he is not human. An average person breaks his hand, they don’t use it for 2-3 months. Utley breaks his hand and he’s hitting homeruns in the Major Leagues one month later.
The Bad: When your starter goes six strong innings and the offense scores nine runs, once again there is nothing to complain about.
It’s always good to win. It’s even better when you win by seven. It’s the best when you win by seven against the Mets. However, before anyone gets ahead of themselves we have to remember that this is the same team that lost their series to the Dodgers and Padres. I like to think that this outburst of runs is because of Chase Utley.
I’m not referring to his 3-for-5 day, or his two RBI’s , or his run scored. I’m talking about the fact that this team’s leader finally comes back and carries the team on his shoulders. Now I know that the rest of the team helped to defeat the Mets, but it’s nice to see this team respond with Utley back in the lineup. However, I wish he could’ve been in the game during the Giles-Ruiz fiasco. I’m sure he wouldn’t have taken all that showboating the Padres did lying down. Hopefully the Phillies will be able to produce without Utley in the lineup because no matter how tough he his, that hand is going to be hurting.
The Phillies have to make the playoffs this year. Don’t worry, I’m not falling for them just because they won ONE game against the Mets. I just think they need to make the playoffs because of how many surprises they pulled out of their ass. We all know how great Greg Dobbs has been this year. And every five games I tell you all how much I am in love with Mr. Kyle Kendrick. But the newest flavor of the month is Jayson Werth. Currently batting 9-for-9, he is quite literally on fire. This is what you need for a playoff berth, no-name players stepping up and putting up outrageous numbers. If only the Phillies could have avoided some key injuries, avoided the transactions that brought Eaton and Barajas to Philadelphia, and had some decent bullpen members this would be a good team. I guess that’s a lot to ask for.
Adam Eaton sucks. And that’s putting it nicely. With a ERA of 6.36, it’s amazing how he’s allowed to continue to take money from this organization. Coming off of his “injury,” one can only hope that maybe he had someone else’s arm attached to his body. The worse part of Eaton pitching is that he really has no pressure to pitch a good game because they have no one to replace him with.

Tom Glavine was very close to getting his 7th loss of the season in his last start, and would have gotten it if it hadn’t been for a six run inning by his teammates in the bottom of the sixth. It wasn’t one of his best games of the year, possibly because of the small strike zone compliments of Derryl Coutins small strike zone. It was a good game for Phillies fans because the Mets lost and Billy Wagner blew a save. We all know what Glavine is capable of. He has an amazing changeup and nibbles at the corners. However since he doesn’t have an over-powering fastball, if his control is lacking or gets a small strike zone, he can turn into Jamie Moyer very quickly.

Last words . . . it’s been a good two days to be a Phillies fan.
