Bats stay dormant.
The Good: I apologize for my sarcastic comments towards Fabio Castro in my last post. He did exactly what is expected from a spot starter. However, five innings of one run ball is not good enough with this bullpen. I’m still at a loss of how he could produce the start he did even with the six walks. It’s nice to see that Victorino is getting back to old form with a stolen base in the game. Werth goes 2-for-3 against a righty! Maybe there’s hope for him after all as an everyday player.
The Bad: You know it’s going to be a tough game when your 3-4-5 hole hitters each have two strikeouts. With a 10.80 ERA in August, it seems that for every good inning Gordon has, he blows a game in his next outing.
Well so much for coming into this homestand with a chance to do some damage. Right now they’re on the verge of digging an inescapable hole.
This homestand is only going to get worse. The Dodgers were a struggling team that were on the verge of falling off the standings. But the Phillies were nice enough to lose two games to allow them to stay in the race. As this season is coming to a close, being able to knock out a team from the Wildcard race will make it easier for us fans that have to scoreboard watch. With the easiest of the three incoming teams leaving Philadelphia with two wins, there will be plenty of heartache left before this season is over.
The AARP should be handing out free tickets to Friday’s game to show that “senior citizens, although slow and dangerous behind the wheel, can still serve a purpose.” (Dumb & Dumber quote for those who didn’t catch it.) With Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer going toe to toe, we will see that control can be more important then speed. Moyer comes into this game off his worse start since July 16th in which he gave up ten earned runs in 5.1 innings. A big part for his struggles lately have seem to be due to the home plate umpires small strike zone. But he’s in the Major League, that’s not a legitimate excuse. The thing about Moyer’s struggle that bothers me the most is that he’s supposed to be teaching the younger players on the team. What is he telling them when the camera shows him talking to other pitchers? Maddux comes into this game with a 9-9 record and a 3.90 ERA. Though he’s not the Cy Yong Award winner that he was years ago, he can still get batters out on a consistent basis. With Philadelphia bats struggling right now, going up against one of the smartest pitchers in baseball should probably lead to just more frustration.
Last start: W / 6.0 / 1 ER / 2 H / 0 BB / 3 SO / Houston
Last comments . . . it’s a shame to see Fabio Castro sent down to the minors, his name gives fans so many possibilities for a fan club.

I’m sick and tired of watching our big oaf come to the plate with runners on base and flail aimlessly at pitches feet out of the strike zone. Stop being a douchebag Howard and produce!!!
