Sports… the Philadelphia way

A snowman in the 5th.

The Good: Burrell goes another game with an RBI. Bourn and Rollins continue to dominate the basepaths. The bullpen looked very dominant. Victorino making up for the absence of Utley by supplying the hard-nose baseball playing

The Bad: Durbin giving up 4 BB.

Before everyone goes out to buy tickets for September, let’s take a step back and remember that the Phillies are playing the last place Pirates. But that being said, this team sure knows how to score some runs. And with Gordon looking to be 100% with that 96 MPH fastball at the knees and Myers looking like he’s strong again, this team doesn’t look too bad. A giant gaping hole is still visible in the starting rotation. If the Phillies really want to make a push for the playoffs, they’re gonna need to pick up a #2 starter. The only problem is that there are also 10 other teams that would like a #2 starter to add to their rotation as well. And when you look at the trade bait that the Phillies have to offer, I’d be shocked if they could come away with anyone.

What else does Coste have to do before he’s allowed to play on a regular basis? I mean really, this guy is a gamer. That homerun was absolutely huge. I was about to turn the game off because I might throw up if the Phillies lose to the Pirates. But then he completely turns the game around with his 3-run shot. And my favorite part about Coste are his throws down to 2nd from his knees. Had Rollins been able to hold on to the ball, that would’ve been a highlight reel play. As much as it pains me to say this, how-about offering Coste as a trade piece. If someone was to start a group to protest the lack of play Coste is getting, I’d be first to sign up. But for one reason or another, Charlie just doesn’t like playing him. Maybe some of the other teams out there exactly watch Coste play with their eyes open and realize how amazing a player he is.

The more I watch Bourn play, the more I love him. I’m never going to be able to get over the fact that he can’t hit the ball out of the infield in the air, but he doesn’t have to. Should Rowand leave at the end of the year, I won’t be that disappointed. If Burrell can maintain his current level of play, same for Victorino, Bourn would be a very nice addition to the outfield. Base stealing is a lost art of baseball and when you have someone who makes it look as easy as Bourn, you know you have something special.

Mr. Consistency is going for the Phillies Sunday. All he needs to do is throw his 6.0 innings and allow his 3 runs and I’ll be more then happy. Ian Snell for the Pirates is hoping that he can hit the restart button since pitching after the All-Star break as he is 0-3 in 3 starts. He has given up 4 or more runs in those 3 starts. If he can continue that trend, Kendrick’s allowing of 3 runs will be just fine.

Last start: L / 4.0 / 6 ER / 10 H / 0 BB / 5 SO / New York

Last words . . . Phillies are undefeated with Iguchi

Chris Coste once again proving why Barajas is a waste of money and roster space. F.U. Gillick!

Durbin pitched like poop, and certianly wasn’t helped by the defense of “The Butcher” Wes Helms. By the way, Helms sucks all-around. He’s a liability at the plate and on the field, meaning he shouldn’t be seeing much playing time…did ya hear that Manuel?!?!?!
