You say goodbye, I say hello.
The Good: The Phillies should really try a game having all their starting pitchers bat in the lineup. They easily have the best hitting pitchers in baseball. These guys may not be able to pitch that well, but boy can they hit. And it’s not officially a game until Pat Burrell walks.
The Bad: Um duh . . . Chase Utley’s out for weeks.
Who needs Chase Utley anyway. I’m just kidding, everyone needs a little bit of Chase in their life. However when you’re getting 3 RBI’s from Pat Burrell, it makes it a little easier to get along without him. And with your leadoff hitter going 4 for 4, that gives everyone lots of opportunities for RBI’s. The only problem is that this level of play is very unlikely to continue. Bourn’s not gonna have that many hits a game and Burrell isn’t always gonna drive in a hat trick. Even with Gordon and Myers coming back, I think the Phillies chances of playoff play without their fearless leader are slim to none.
Tadahito Iguchi!? I have to admit, I was VERY surprised after this move. Trading for a second baseman when you have a capable (but not good) one in Abraham Nunez. It makes you think that Utley may be out for longer then what they are telling us. The only reason I’m not too upset about this move is that Michael Dubee really doesn’t seem like much of a loss. He could turn out into being a great pitcher in the future, but the Phillies management never really worries about pitching in the future. They don’t really even care much about pitching in the present either. I just think that this move was really unnecessary. Are Iguchi’s numbers that much better then Nunez’s that the trade was needed? Hopefully he’ll be able to help this team and avoid having a season similar to that of Barajas or Helms.
If J.D. Durbin as a game anywhere near the level of play he did in his last start, the Phillies should be in good position to win. This kid was absolutely dealing, all we can hope for is that it didn’t all go to his head. You should never head into a game taking the opposing team lightly, even if it is the pathetic Pittsburgh Pirates. As for the Pirates starter Shane Youman, there’s not much to go on as he’s only pitched in 5 games in his major league career.
Last start: L / 8.0 / 1 ER / 4 H / 2 BB / 3 SO
Last words . . . Iguchi has his work cut out for him replacing Utley.
