Sports… the Philadelphia way

Garcia the flop.

Before everyone starts blaming Barajas for “choking” I hope we are all mature enough to realize it’s not his fault the Phils lost.  There really is no one to blame for that lose.  They just ran into some great pitching by Doug Davis.

Today’s game did give more support to the Dobbs > Burrell concept I’ve had in my head for awhile.  I don’t know if it’s the nagging injuries or his pompous attitude that he doesn’t need any help on hitting, but Burrell just isn’t getting the job done.  I’m not saying Dobbs is a future Hall of Famer, but why not ride him and his hot bat until he starts to cool off.

What I’d like to vent about today is the flop that is Freddy Garcia.  Coming into this season, he was the BIG offseason move.  He was supposed to come in and solidify this rotation and possibly be the ace.  Right now with Moyer doing his thing and Eaton doing a pretty decent job, I’d name Garcia as the 4th or 5th starter.  Having 8 starts and only 1 win with a 4.81 ERA is a joke.  The one win he does have, he only went 5 innings agains the last place Reds.  His longest outing (before today) was 6.0, three different times.  It’s easy to blame the bullpen for the Phillies struggles and it’s fun to blame Burrell.  However, it seems that every starter has stepped up their game except for Garcia.  He did have a good start today and was unlucky that giving up only 3 runs didn’t give him a win.  I’d just like to see him in a game in which he dominates the opposing team for a chance, instead of just squeaking bye.

Seeing Howard hit the ball out to the opposite field gave me flashbacks to his stellar performance last year, and hopefully all his early season struggles were due to his leg injury.  The last inning comeback was exciting and it was nice to see another team have a late game defensive lapse for a change.

Last words . . . someone should have told Valverde that his hat was on crooked (I HATE when players do that).

Tonight is not the night to criticize Garcia.

I agree overall, Freddy Garcia has been a huge letdown, but last night was his finest effort by far, and the Phils should have found a way to win that game. They blew numerous opportunities early in the game with runners at 3rd with less than 2 outs, but did not score (typical Phils).
