Eagles’ Actions Carry More Weight Than What They Say
When it comes to fans of the Philadelphia Eagles, we certainly have our opinions. For instance, you either love Donovan McNabb or you hate him. You either think Andy Reid & Co. are close-minded, or, you admire the discipline they have to stick to their system of evaluating and obtaining talent for the team.
But one thing nearly every fan can agree on is that the spin the team puts on certain situations is maddening and frustrating. For instance, several years ago, Andy Reid told us that the Eagles felt they were set at the wide receiver position with James Thrash and Todd Pinkston leading the way. Even moderately interested fans looked at these statements of confidence and said, “What?!?” At other times, we’ve also been told by those in charge at the NovaCare Complex that the Eagles were set at linebacker and running back. Again, these pronouncements were met with, to put it mildly, skepticism from the fans.
But rather than become frustrated, it might be more constructive to forget about what Reid & Co. say and look more closely and place more value on what the Eagles do. Remember, no sooner had the Eagles said they were willing to go into another season with James Thrash and Todd Pinkston than they were trading for Terrell Owens, perhaps the best wide receiver in the league at the time. Since that situation turned sour, they’ve continued with the theme of placing a higher value on the wide receiver position than before by trading for Donte Stallworth and replacing him with Kevin Curtis.
More recently, a few weeks ago prior to the NFL Draft, Tom Heckert, the Eagles general manager, when asked in several media outlets if the the organization felt a bigger, more physical running back was needed, responded that they were fine with Correll Buckhalter and Brian Westbrook at running back. But then, just a few days later, they selected Tony Hunt from Penn State and Nate Ilaoa from Hawaii. And, just a few weeks before that, the Eagles traded for linebacker Takeo Spikes to bolster the corps that was supposedly deemed adequate enough to go to war with in September.
So, rather than getting all lathered up everytime the Eagles declare a clearly mediocre group of players perfectly fine for making a Super Bowl run with, perhaps fans should just take a deep breath and wait to see what the team does, not says.
