NFL Draft Weekend
The NFL draft starts today and the Eagles are expected to concentrate on filling defensive holes. Everyone has an opinion on just how they are going to go about it and below is a sampling of predictions from several outlets on who the Eagles will snag in their first pick (26th overall):
- Our Lads Scouting: Paul Pozlusney, LB, Penn State
- Derek Harper (NFLDraftScouts.com): Brandon Merriweather, FS, Miami
- Mel Kiper (ESPN): Brandon Merriweather, FS, Miami
- Vic Carucci (NFL.com): Michael Griffin, FS, Texas
- Les Bowen (Daily News): Brandon Merriweather, FS, Miami
- Jared Sherman (Comcast Sportsnet): Brandon Merriweather, FS, Miami
- Ron Burke (Comcast Sportsnet): Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas
- Ray Didinger (Comcast Sportsnet): Brandon Merriweather, FS, Miami
The consensus is that the Eagles will take Brandon Merriweather and groom him to take over for the aging but still quite effective Brian Dawkins. However, there are certainly some questions about Merriweather’s character having been caught up in an off-campus shooting incident and caught on tape stomping on a Florida International player during a brawl. One has to wonder if the legal troubles of head coach Andy Reid’s sons will influence the team’s decision causing them to steer away from Merriweather.
The first pick of the draft (Oakland Raiders) is at noon today. Check back for updates as the day goes on…
