The morons in the morning

I can’t believe what I just heard. The clown Angelo Cataldi was discussing draft scenarios with associate clown Mark Eckel of the Trenton Times. After honking each others’ noses a couple times, Eckel and Cataldi decided to comment on Ray Didinger’s belief that the Eagles are targeting Miami safety Brandon Meriweather in the first round. Meriweather has perceived character issues, which for some reason or another seem to concern Eckel and Cataldi.

A sidenote here – Angelo has, in the past, publically lobbied for and/or endorsed the acquisition of the following players:

Cato June, Mike Doss, Jeff Garcia, Ricky Williams, Travis Henry, Corey Dillion…..among others I can’t remember. So we’ve got wifebeaters, sexual deviants, and simple DUIs. DUIs seem relatively innocent, yet a DUI will get you suspended in the NFL these days. So where is the consistency of opinion from Angelo Cataldi? Like usual, there is none. They guy forms opinions like the main character in that movie Memento, then forgets why, and moves on.

Some background. Brandon Meriweather has two incidents on his rap sheet.

1. Pulled a gun, and shot at a man who had already discharged a gun and hit his friend in the ass. Yes, his friend got shot in his asshole.

2. Got a little overexcited and began to stomp on a player’s head and ass during the infamous Miami-Florida International brawl.

Meriweather is number 19:

Not something to be proud of, but would this keep a team from drafting him? Doubt it.

Getting to the point. Both Eckel and Cataldi agree that the Eagles should steer clear clear from such a shady character. Why? Because it would be hypocritical to draft such a player in light of the problems Andy Reid’s children have experienced this offseason. Especially the gun incident.

Cataldi [paraphrasing]: “Meriweather basically got in trouble for the same thing Reid’s kid did with the gun charge.”

You’ve got to be kidding me.

Oh really? Miami police deemed that Meriweather used his gun legally, defending himself and his friend. Meriweather legally obtained his permit to carry a concealed weapon, which, by the way, aren’t handed out like flyers on the street. Meriweather hasn’t been involved in any incidents before or after.

Britt Reid’s situation is a little different. Road rage leads to pointing a gun at some dude’s head for what? Not signalling a lane change? No gun permit, thus carrying the gun illegally. Drugs found in the car.

To me, Meriweather really has one incident on his rap sheet, and that’s the stomping incident. So one may make the argument: How can a man who obviously cannot control his emotions during a football game be expected to take responsibility for a concealed weapon? Good point. But, to date, Meriweather has not shown he can’t handle the responsibility. To me, it all comes down to this:

Meriweather has never been arrested or detained by the police, and I think he’d look damn good in Eagle Green.

By the way, Lito Sheppard, Jevon Kearse, and Jerome McDougle all have concealed weapons permits. McDougle may have saved his own life due to his. I’m not getting political here, this is a sports blog, and I detest when people grandstand on this kind of stuff, I’m just highlighting that good people/players can feel the need to carry a weapon for a number of reasons.

Cataldi had just finished a conversation about Mark’s wang, calling him the Milton Burrell of journalism. Shows the type of character/couth/decency that clown (Cataldi) has.
