Eagles Re-sign Correll Buckhalter

A day after signing WR stud Kevin Curtis from the Rams, the Birds have re-signed Correll Buckhalter to a 2 year contract.

What should we make of this recent flurry of activity by the Eagles? With Buckhalter, I have mixed emotions. He did pretty well this year, but I still feel that they need a bigger back. Buckhalter is fine until someone else comes along (draft?).

On the Curtis deal here are my thoughts. Either Eagles management thinks a little more slowly than the Patriots, or they made the smarter move in waiting for a long term deal with a WR. I guess we’ll find out over the next few years. Apparently Stallworth had baggage that Curtis doesn’t…

Hopefully this will start to silence the sports radio callers who have been whining that the Eagles don’t do anything in the offseason. Buckhalter and Curtis are two signs that the Eagles are indeed taking smart steps to build a winning team for 2007-2008.

I’m ok with Kevin Curtis. He’s a more durable Donte Stallworth. But I can honestly say I was looking forward to Buckhalter’s departure from the team this offseason. I’m sure he’s a great guy and he’s got a lot of heart to come back and everything, but Westbrook is already brittle enough. I’d rather back him up with a more durable option, not someone running on thrice surgically repaired knees. I hope it all works out, but I would hardly call Buckhalter’s re-signing a smart step towards building a winning team. Hopefully I’m wrong.

The Buckhalter signing signals a RB draft pick.

The Bill James signing signals a CB draft pick.

The lack of signing Ryan Fowler signals a LB draft pick.

    I think I’ve got a blog post.

I think the opposite on Buckhalter…now they have Westbrook, Buckhalter, Moats, and Perry. I think next year they will draft a RB.

However, they are short at CB and I hope they realize they need LB bad.

I feel like they’re going for a safety in the first round.

I could see them going after a hybrid safety/corner in the 1st round. But who knows, maybe they’ll go back to their “best talent” philosophy and end up picking another Westbrook/Moats;-)

With a healthy McNabb and a good run-blocking O, the Eagles should score enough points to win. Defense is another story. Unless they are drafting a right tackle, I’d rather not see an offensive player taking in the first three rounds.

They have to get a young middle linebacker in the draft, don’t they?

I’d like to see their first three picks be in any order: MLB, Safety, CB.
