Television gripe
I feel like Peter King here with his Enjoyable/Aggravating Travel Note of the Week commentary, but I’ve just got to get something off my spoiled little chest.
This year, as my Christmas bonus from my employer, I received 42″ Samsung plasma television. Pretty sweet bonus. And yes, we are hiring.
Last night we had 6 solid hours of Philadelphia sports programming. The 76ers at 7:00, followed by a nice west coast game for the Flyers at 10:00. Both games were away games. If you own a HDTV, you know what that means, no high definition. Comcast Sportsnet does not, will not, or can’t broadcast away games in high definition. Same deal with CN8 and WPSG 57. If the game is outside the walls of Citizens Bank Park or the Wachovia Center, we get the standard definition treatment.
Is there a good reason for this?
Over 4 years ago one of my buddies purchased a 50″ HDTV. This was groundbreaking because at the time, I shared an apartment with the kid. The television was to be the centerpiece of the bar located in the basement of the apartment. The bar, equipped with a two-tower kegerator, a stocked liquor cabinet, beruit table, dart board, 4 standard televisions, and now the 50″ HDTV was complete. If fact, it completed me. Life was good. All that studying in college paid off.

Too bad women started flocking. One by one, roommates left to go ahead and get married. The bar was dissolved when the lease wasn’t renewed. The dream was over.
Got a little off track there. My point: Nothing has changed since my buddy purchased his HDTV 4 years ago. Home games were broadcast in HD, and away games in SD. I thought, over time as HDTV’s become more prevalent, service would improve, progress would be made. No such luck.
Why is this? Is it a transmission issue? Is it a camera issue? Is it a licensing issue? I guarantee the Atlanta Hawks game was broadcast in HD in Atlanta, so why not in Philadelphia? Why am I such a spoiled little asshole, complaining about such things?
Someone explain please.
