The last we’ve heard from Jeff Garcia
So Jeff Garcia lands with those Tampa Bay Buccaneers, most likely due to the fact that earlier this week I opined that Tampa wouldn’t be interested in the man. Well, turns out, they were, and I was wrong. Can’t say my logic was off however, as Tampa has put together an offseason of insanity at the QB position.

First: Chris Simms signs a multi-year extension; the deal includes a $3 million signing bonus and a $2 million base salary in 2007. The deal could be worth as much as $14.5 million with escalators and incentives.
Second: Bucs trade a conditional draft pick to acquire the rights to Jake Plummer, due to make $5.3 million in 2007. Plummer decides to retire rather than play for Tampa.
Third: Bucs sign Jeff Garcia to a 2 year deal for a total of 7 million bucks, of which 5 million will be paid in 2007.
Yes, you read that correctly, Jeff Garcia is scheduled to make $5 million smackers next year. To put that in perspective below are the respective 2007 salaries of some of the better signal callers in the NFL.
Carson Palmer: $7.25 million
Tom Brady: $6 million
Donovan McNabb: $5.5 million
Drew Brees: $2.8 million
Now, I know there are much more to these deals in terms of guaranteed money, but isn’t 5 million a year a little steep for Jeff Garcia? Damon Huard, the NFL’s best backup QB of 2006 signed a 3-year extension with the Chiefs worth 7.5 million, or 2.5 million a season. Is Jeff Garcia 100% better than Damon Huard?
No.
And when you compare Garcia’s salary numbers to those of A.J. Feeley’s extension, they become all the more outrageous.
A.J. Feeley will receive salaries of $800,000 in 2007, $900,000 in 2008, $1.3 million in 2009, and $1.8 million in 2010.
I hope its obvious to everyone now that Garcia was never coming back to Philadelphia. I’m sure the Eagles would have offered Garcia approximately what he made last year with the team or around $1 million with incentives. Remember Garcia and his agent stating that Garcia would take substantially less money to return to the Eagles? I doubt their definition of substantial approximated 4 million dollars. Probably more like $400,000 dollars.
Good luck Jeff, you’ll need it on a team like Tampa. Let me be the first visionary to predict a Garcia performance in 2007 that replicates his past experiences in Cleveland and Detroit. Garcia was afforded the privilege of stellar offensive line protection in Philadelphia, a luxury that does not exist in Tampa. Just ask Chris Simms’s spleen.

RUMORS
Birds interested in Corey Dillon?
I’d rather draft a guy, but that’s just me. Maybe Tony Hunt? Hmmm….hmmm…hmmm?
___
Tully Banta-Cain also on the Birds radar?
___
On to the Phillies – from today’s Hartford Courant:
The team is interested is acquiring Blue Jays outfielder Alex Rios, mlb.com reported. The Phillies are believed to be offering a package that includes pitcher Jon Lieber. They would then try to trade center fielder Aaron Rowand to the Padres for reliever Scott Linebrink.

I actually think Garcia will get hurt before he can play badly. On his “run” last year, every hit was a threat to knock him out.
I personally love Alex Rios, but I’m afraid that Philadelphia would turn on him, much like another Latin American outfielder.
You hear the Toronto GM commented that he would only trade Rios for Hamels or Myers? Dude needs to get real.
If I had Alex Rios, I would want a young starter for him too. Alex Rios is really good.
