This and that
The Birds just reupped Juqua Thomas to the tune of 5 years. No financial terms have been announced.
I’m pretty lukewarm to this deal. I had this to say about re-signing Juqua Thomas a couple weeks back:
By the way, I’d be wary of re-signing Juqua Thomas to any kind of deal other than a minimum contract. If I hear another “But what if Thomas is the next Derrick Burgess?” comment I’m going to kick someone’s ass. Derrick Burgess was an early 3rd round pick that showed promise anytime he was healthy enough to play. Juqua Thomas was an undrafted free agent that was cut from his original team (Tenn).
When Derrick Burgess left the Eagles in 2005 he was 26 years old.
Juqua Thomas is 29 years old.
Thomas had a nice year in 2006. Remember 2005?
2005: 16 games, 0 sacks
2006: 18 games, 7 sacks - CONTRACT YEAR!
81 players had 5 or more sacks in 2006 during the regular season. Thomas filled the N.D. Kalu role. Where was the clamor to re-sign N.D. Kalu?
We’ll see what 2007 brings. Some Joker LB perhaps?

Scottie f*cking Upshaw everybody!! If you don’t know what I’m talking about, new Flyer Scottie Upshaw scored a magnificent little breakaway goal with 9.9 seconds left in overtime to best the Boston Bruins 4-3 last night. Upshaw’s breakaway deke was Forsberg-esque.

The Phils lost their MLB spring debut to the Tigers yesterday 9-7. A couple things to note:
Greg Dobbs has 2 dingers in as many games.
Fabio Castro’s line: 3 innings pitched, 2 hits, 2 K’s, 0 runs.

By the way, who thinks Larry Brown will be coaching the 76ers next year? Yesterday Stephen A. Smith made his feelings known that he believes Brown will be the coach come next season’s opening tip, and now, the Inquirer’s Frank Fitzpatrick joins the fray. But Fitzpatrick’s coach to be is not Larry Brown, it’s Villanova’s Jay Wright.
Beware of the men behind the pens however. Smith and Fitz are suspect.

“2005: 16 games, 0 sacks 2006: 18 games, 7 sacks - CONTRACT YEAR!”
2005 was also a contract year for Thomas, as he had only signed a one year deal.
I was pretty amazed by how much better he played in 2006. He really played into his role and opportunity, while in 2005, he was unable to do anything despite Kalu being injured, and Cole hitting the wall.
