Sports… the Philadelphia way

Feeley and the Flyers

Jeff Garcia, the Philadelphia Eagle savior of 2006, is as good as gone. The Eagles decided their future is better guarded by A.J. Feeley, a younger, bigger-armed QB with an equally hot girlfriend.

And I can’t say I disagree with their decision.

Feeley

I know, I know, Jeff Garcia was the spark that ignited the 2006 turnaround. And while I don’t disagree with that statement, there were other key components to the Birds rebirth. Maybe a man by the name of Brian Westbrook perhaps? Westbrook averaged 107 rushing yards (138 total yards) in Garcia’s eight meaningful starts. What about an offensive line that physically dominated opponents week in and week out? Now I’m not trying to minimize what Garcia contributed to the Eagles run last year, I’m just attempting to put it in perspective.

So within the framework which is the Eagles offense, is Feeley as capable as Garcia?

Garcia’s average numbers as the Philadelphia Eagles’ QB:

18 completions, 31 attempts, 160 yards, 1.5 TDs, 0.25 Ints, 0.63 fumbles

Feeley’s average numbers as the Philadelphia Eagles’ QB:

18 completions, 31 attempts, 219 yards, 1.3 TDs, 0.83 Ints, 0.33 fumbles

Looking at the above numbers, I’d say the Eagles made a solid business decision. Now we have to be subjected to the sour grapes display Garcia has exhibited since the deal was announced. Garcia couldn’t understand why the Eagles weren’t being proactive in discussing potential numbers with his agent Steve Baker. I guess Jeff Garcia doesn’t know how the Birds do business. Why would the Eagles take the first step in signing a QB who declared his intentions to test free agency on national television? Why would they define the free agency market before the market defined itself?

Garcia stated: “If I just ask for what I made last year, or a little more than what I made last year, then I’m lowballing myself, after last season, they’d be getting the bargain of the century, and I’m going to be [ticked] off.”

But what is the market for Jeff Garcia? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Just extended Chris Simms. The Chicago Bears? Possibly. One interested party does not make a market. So is there a market for Jeff Garcia at the price he believes he’s worth? I don’t think so.
