Sports… the Philadelphia way

Am I missing something here?

Now obviously this trade isn’t too important in the long term for the Sixers, but I’m annoyed by it so can somebody just explain the point.

OK, so we traded Alan Henderson to the Jazz tonight. We also threw in cash in the deal. OK, so far I’m with you. And what did we get in return? The right to switch second-round picks with the Jazz.

Just for the record - no pun intended - the Jazz are 35-18 while the Sixers are a robust 18-36. Even if the Sixers ran the table on the entire freakin’ season, they still would not have a better record than the Jazz. So, what is the point? And why the hell did we include cash in this deal? Were the Jazz hesitant at first?

Look at it this way. You and a friend are going out to eat Saturday night. You know you’re gonna order Filet Mignon and your buddy is gonna have a side salad. And then on the way to the restaurant, you give your friend $20 for the right to switch meals if you want to. Yea, makes a lot of sense…

“This move gives us increased flexibility and provides us with additional options on draft day,” Sixers president Billy King said.

Additional options? Hmmm. Honestly, the only thing I can think here is that maybe if the Sixers switch second-round picks this year that there is an extra incentive, like they get Utah’s 2009 second-rounder or something.

If that’s not the case, then we essencially gave the Jazz money to take Alan Henderson.

The best way to summarize this all? Six words: How many days til Phillies season?

Yeah, what a joke. It basically sums up Kings’ tenure as GM.

And btw, isn’t this the first season in forever that there has been almost universal optimism surrounding a Phillies season? I remain skeptical, but hopeful. That’s a change from years past when I knew they were going nowhere.

Everyone I know is pumped about the Phils. Even though its been said many times: “this is the Phils year.” You can’t help but truly believing this is their year. The team is so likeable with players like Utley, Howard, Rollins, Victorino, and Rowand. They’re getting a ton of fan support this year. It should be good to see the Phils playin in October.

Put me into the skeptical but hopeful category too. There’s still room, isn’t there?

From what I understand this is mostly a money move to get us under the luxury tax.

The trade was nothing more than a way for the Sixers to get rid of Henderson without having it go against the cap, and actually cost the Sixers more money. King actually got a favor out of the Jazz. If anything, this was a smart move for King.

    Go Phils.
