John Amaechi, ESPN prostitute

Anyone hear that ex-NBAer John Amaechi is gay? WOW. You mean one guy out of thousands of past and present NBA players is gay? Baffling. What are the odds of that?

Amaechi

So John Amaechi is gay. What’s the story here? Billy Jean King is gay. Martina Navratilova is gay. Greg Louganis is gay, he even wrote a book about it 11 years ago. Numerous past NFL players have already come out of the closet. So again, what’s the story here? It’s 2007 right? I could really care less about a person’s sexuality. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To each his own.

So there must be more to this story.

Book deal baby! But hasn’t this book been written before? As said above, Louganis wrote a book about his ordeal 11 years ago, and a plethora of books profiling gay athletes have been published in the past few years. A sample:

An NFLer:

Alone in the Trenches: My Life As a Gay Man in the NFL
by Esera Tuaolo (February 2006) - Published by Sourcebooks

Another NFLer:

Out of Bounds by Roy Simmons (December 2005) - Published by Caroll and Graf

An Olympic Swimmer:

Inside Out: Straight Talk from a Gay Jock by Mark Tewksbury (April 2006) - Published by Wiley

Hell, even the former New Jersey governor got in on the act:

The Confession by James E. McGreevey (September 2006) - Published by Regan Books

And now to the man at hand, John Amaechi, the first NBA player to come out:

Man in the Middle by John Amaechi (February 2007) - Published by ESPN Books

Me: Seems as if this story has been told before.

Media: But he’s the first gay NBA player to come out!!!!!

Me: Good for him, but again, why all the hub bub? Why is this plastered all over the place? Is this going to be a huge story when the first NHL guy comes out? The first major league baseballer?

Only if ESPN is involved. Take a look at the publisher of John Amaechi’s new book. ESPN Books. Now go to ESPN.com and look around, as of Saturday the 17th, there are no less than 6 different stories posted on the matter. SI.com has only 2 posts by my account. Sportsline.com: 2 stories.

Just received my new ESPN the Magazine yesterday. Amaechi is on the cover: book excerpt. Turned on Sportscenter yesterday, Amaechi giving an interview. What would you call this? Cross media marketing? A legitimate media goliath pimping their own self interests?

Exactly. So Amaechi is whoring out his sexuality for profit, and ESPN is his pimp. When did ESPN become an infomercial?

*Standing ovation* What a crock. ESPN is so vested in its own self interest that this story is going to get rammed down our throat for the rest of the year. Expect it to be rammed down on our throats for moments of the year, decade, existence of ESPN. And I will die a little every time, not because Amaechi is gay, but because ESPN sees it a bottom line.

I’m glad you get my point. I was hesitant to post this opinion, because I thought many would take it the wrong way. The story isn’t about Amaechi, its about the pathetic and self serving ESPN Network.

The marketing blitz by ESPN is rather overwhelming. Who is buying this book though? Is there that great of an interest in gay people playing sports that people will want to read this book? The only people I thought that would want to read this book are other gay athletes, Ijust don’t see how this book will sell many copies despite it being merketed everywhere you go.

    Shame on ESPN. Un-freakin-believable.

Would you expect a company that releases something to NOT promote it? It’s still a news story and honestly, ESPN isn’t nearly the only media outlet to over sensationalize something. They also probably wouldn’t make it such a big story if there was actually something worth reporting out there, but nothing is going on. We’re in the nothing days of sports.

This guy was probably very disapointed to see the NBA go from the short shorts to the oversized baggy look. I guess I’m showing my age.
