Breaking news: Forsberg Traded

Comcast Sportsnet: Forsberg to be dealt pending league approval
ESPN.com: Flyers trade Forsberg to Preds

Flyers receive in return:

Scottie Upshaw – RW – #6 overall pick in the 2002 draft.

Ryan Parent - D – #18 overall in 2005 draft

Draft picks are reportedly a 1st round pick and a 3rd round pick.

Another superstar is out of Philadelphia. I can’t say I blame the Flyers. Forsberg is on the downside of his career, he can’t seem to stay healthy (as if he ever could), and he’s a free agent after this season. The Flyers suck, and look to add to the young nucleus of the club in order to build towards he future. The old Flyer business model of buying mass quantities of aging talent is now obsolete in the new salary cap burdened NHL. Much like the NFL, success in the new NHL will be driven by smart drafting and the development of young talent. For the Flyers sake, this move may be a step in that direction.

Hell, the Flyers could always re-sign him right?

Good move. I’m glad they did the right thing and weren’t deceived by the latest winning streak.

BTW, Howard Eskin made this call almost 2 weeks ago. Sometimes I admire the guy for doing his homework, but that attitude can drive me crazy too
