Sports… the Philadelphia way

That’s the Sixers!!!

Coach Maurice Cheeks and the 76ers have been riding high over about the last two weeks. Winning 4 of their last 6, confidence on the team was riding high, while the entire 76ers faithful throughout the city (yes, the remaining 14 of them) grimaced as the wins kept piling up. The party came to a halt tonight, though, as the team was spanked by the Houston Rockets 105-84.

Well, it’s hard to say the party came to a screeching halt. Nobody really thought this team had suddenly become good. Even a bad team will have atleast one good stretch in the season. But there was a little panic…is this team just a little bit too good to win the lottery? The answer, quite simply, is no.

The wins over the course of the last two weeks has been the product of fool’s gold. In the span of six games (before last night’s game) they beat the Heat, lost to the Spurs, beat the Hornets, won and lost to the Cavs, and defeated the Hawks in Atlanta. Let’s look at the four teams they Sixers beat during that stretch. The Heat are a bunch of lazy, unmotivated veterans, along with Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem. The Hornets have lost a good portion of their roster due to injury. The Cavs are scrubs. Flat out, it’s Lebron James, and a bunch of guys that show up here and there, but not every time. (I hate the make-up of that team. They absolutely do not have what it takes to get far in the playoffs. It’s odd, but I have a weird, bizarre, passionate hatred for everyone on that team.) Lastly, the Hawks have great young talent, but a poor coach that cannot motivate and teach them to win. Not a great string of wins.

The problem with the Sixers is the same thing that has plagued them since Larry Brown stepped down. They can beat teams that are like them…sloppy, inconsistent, no real identity…but when they go up against a disciplined team like the Rockets, they get killed. The same thing happens when they go against the Suns, too. And the Spurs, Pistons, Mavericks, etc.. They just cannot hang with these teams that have been taught how to play properly.

One would think they will probably still end up with one of the three worst records in the league. Can they be lucky enough to get Oden or Durant?? We’ll see.

Another win = a few less balls to get Oden/Durrant. Although its good to see they’re doing better together over this brief span, I agree it doesn’t mean that their recent success will continue. At least if they don’t get a top 2 pick at least they can parlay the 3 picks they have in order to make a move.

Does anybody still watch the NBA? I mean can you sit down and watch an entire game??? The Nova-Pitt game on Monday was better viewing entertainment than probably 90 percent of NBA regular-season games.

And seriously, even if the Sixers do get one of the top two picks, do you think with Billy King and Larry Brown running the show a good move will be made?
