Sports… the Philadelphia way

Around the Papers

Talk about a lull in the sports season. I went from getting a college football bowl game nightly, with pro football sprinkled in on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday to the 76ers trailing the Memphis Grizzlies by 20 points. Gambling can’t even keep me interested. I do know that the NFL draft is a mere 100 sunsets away. The NFL combine is a mere 33 days from our grasp.

More importantly, the Fightin Phils hit spring training soon, with games to commence on February 28th. So we’re really only one month away from emerging from this tunnel of darkness. And if you can’t get fired up to watch 300 pound men run doing 3-cone drills in the RCA Dome clad in tights than you need to get your pulse checked brotha. I know that Jeff Garcia already bought some hand cream and scheduled his TIVO for that shit.

So Donovan McNabb isn’t going to hold his scheduled press conference today to update everyone on his rehabilitation process. Who cares? The writers in this town are all bitching about this lack of availability. Rueben Frank is acting like someone shoved a Rueben Frank up his ass. So I guess Andy Reid was on Eskin yesterday and basically stated that nothing beneficial can come from a McNabb press conference at this juncture. I’d agree with him. Although I wouldn’t mind getting some info on how his rehab is progressing (he supposedly began running last week), all of the Jeff Garcia/Wilma McNabb/Eagles reversal of fortune after his injury questions would be tedious and pointless.

Andre Iguodala is sitting out the dunk contest this year because he says “they need some new young guys.” Iguodala is 22 years old.

The Birds have 11 free agents, none of which are restricted.

Shawn Barber - gone.

Correll Buckhalter - interesting. I can’t see anyone really having any interest but the Birds. I’d hope Buck’s back as the #3 RB next year. Westbrook, young stud draft pick, Buckhalter.

Koy Detmer - gone.

Jeff Garcia - will be back. Sign him to an incentive laden deal.

Roderick Hood - gone. He’ll garner more money elsewhere.

William James - coming back. He didn’t play enough to get significant interest from other squads. By the way, his name is Bill Jim, not William James.

Michael Lewis - gone. He’ll continue his overrated Roy Williams impersonation elsewhere.

Reno Mahe - Andy Reid will probably offer Reno an A-Rod type deal.

Quintin Mikell - I’d like to see Mikell back. He flashed a little at the end of the year.

Donte Stallworth - I touched on this the other day. I hope Stallworth is back but he can’t get too greedy.

Juqua Thomas - ditto

By the way, Shaq isn’t playing tonight, so the 76ers will only lose by 19.

Kevin Durant is coming to the Wachovia Center on Saturday to play Villanova. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a college basketball scouting genius. I declared that Tim Duncan would suck in the NBA. However, Durant has shown me a lot more than Greg Oden this year. I’ll continue to scout him come Saturday.

Ah, but the Sixers won. Still, they almost gave up a 17 point lead

Not real keen on the gay crack on Garcia. Uncool.
