The Saints are Coming….

Since Sunday when it became apparant that the Eagles were going to New Orleans, I couldn’t help but sing that song Green Day and U2 covered to help out the Katrina cause. Seeing how FOX and/or NBC will ram it down our throats for the next two weeks (trust me, they will), I figure a Green Day/U2 theme for this weekend’s picks seems fitting.

Colts v. Ravens

“Talk is cheap and lies are expensive
My wallet’s fat and so is my head
Hit and run and then I’ll hit you again
I’m a smart ass, but I’m playing dumb” –
Green Day, Walking Contradiction

This lyric goes out to Peyton Manning, as he faces a defense that will more than likely make his day a living hell. Manning didn’t go a long way last week to disprove the knock against him that he can’t play postseason football. While the Indy defense will get their points, you are not going to see Joseph Addai rush for 108 yards this week. Barring a Steve McNair injury, The Ravens are just too strong for a Colts team that hasn’t been the same since November. Tack on another year of nauseating talk about what the Colts have to do for Peyton Manning to win the big one.

Saints v. Eagles

“The saints are coming, the saints are coming
I say no matter how i try, I realize there’s no reply”
- Green Day/U2, “The Saints Are Coming”

This lyric goes out to the fact that no matter how it is looked at, The Saints are just an all-around better football team than the Eagles. Yes, the Eagles only lost on a last-second field goal. Yes, this isn’t the same Eagles team that played the Saints in Week 6. The Saints still have a dynamic offense that even with Lito Sheppard aboard, the Eagles are going to have a hard time stopping this week. Do not expect Joselio Hanson and William James to pick up the load this week. Once again, it will be a game, but the Saints have too much firepower for the Eagles to stop.

Seahawks v. Bears

“I can’t believe the news today, Oh, I can’t close my eyes and make it go away” – U2, Sunday Bloody Sunday

Ugh. This game has all the makings of being the runt of this weekend’s playoff litter. Is anyone outside of Chicago or Seattle excited to watch this game? Be that as it may, there are still plenty of questions that line this game: Which Rex Grossman will show up? Will Shaun Alexander finally turn it on? Will Brian Griese suit up if Grossman tanks it? While the Bears defense has been the class of the league all year, playoff experience is always an important intangible to have on your side. I see an upset brewing here.

Patriots v. Chargers

“I have spoke with the tongue of angels, I have held the hand of a devil, It was warm in the night, I was cold as a stone…But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for” – U2 I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For

This lyric goes out to the fact that I don’t have a definitive answer to how this game is going to play out. Phillip Rivers is playing his first playoff game; under Marty Schottenheimer no less. While Schottenheimer is 5-12 in playoff games, none were played with an MVP LaDanian Tomlinson in his backfield. The Patriots are 11-1 under the Brady/Belichick regime in the playoffs, but you mean to tell me we are going to see the Pats defeat the Chargers with another stellar game from Jabar Gaffney? Really? REALLY?

This game could end up going seven different ways, but I can’t pick against against Tom Brady in the playoffs.

Chargers 28

Everyone enjoy the weekend and the football on tap.
