Sports… the Philadelphia way

This and that in the NFL

Anyone read Peter King’s MMQB on Monday?  I not kidding when I say this but shocker, 80% of it is about the Patriots.  He even picks Jabar Gaffney as his MVP of the week.

Yes Jabar Gaffney.  Let’s look at the tale of the tape shall we:

Week 1 Playoff MVP Candidates:

Jabar Gaffney: 8-104, 0 TDs

Joseph Addai: 25-122 1 TD, 7 catches for 26 yards.

Dallas Clark: 9-103 yards

Jerramy Stevens: 5-77 2 TDs

Brian Westbrook: 20-141 1 TD, 2 catches 12 yards

I watched every single shred of the playoff games this past weekend and I can say definitively that Westbrook, Stevens, and Addai all were much more valuable to their teams last week than Mr. Jabar Gaffney.  Just another case of Peter King’s head buried in the Patriots proverbial crotch.

Some optimism:

The Saints were 3-4 in meaningful games at the Superdome this year.  In my definition of “meaningful” I am of course excluding that final meaningless game they walked through against Carolina.  Remember the Eagles/Falcons game?  Yes, same deal in New Orleans with that final Carolina contest.  Jamie Martin was quarterbacking the squad in that game for Christ’s sake.
___

The Saints allowed an NFC high 4.9 yards a rush on defense this year.  Add that with a healthy dose of Jamaal Jackson, mixed with Shawn Andrews, Todd Herremans, Bill Thomas, and hairy-armed werewolf extraordinaire Jon Runyan, and I think we may be on to something.  I forgot the key ingredient, Brian Westbrook, a running back who averaged 5.1 yards per carry (7.1 in the Giant game) in a league that averaged 4.2 yards per carry.  If there was any a game that the 50/50 pass/run ratio applied, I’d peg this one.
___

The Saints lost to the Redskins in week 16-10 in week 15.

That’s it.  The Redskins suck remember.
_____

Around the NFC:

Good news! Looks like the New York Football Giants are going to retain the affable Tom Coughlin as their head coach in 2007.  I think I just heard the collective groan of the Giants squad facing the reality that they will continue to arrive at the 8:00 scheduled meeting at 7:50 or they will be fined.  Look for a number of retirement announcements in the upcoming week, including sir Michael Strahan.  I’m not kidding either.  Mike, on a quest for “more meat” may find his time more aptly spent trolling the New York for the best sausage sandwich a man can wrap his lips around.
_____

I can watch this all day.

Tony Romo, they’re all gonna laugh at you.
_____

Nice little article on not so little Shawn Andrews.  Yes, the man who has a shrine dedicated to SpongeBob Squarepants at his house.  Good for Andrews that he’s 340 pounds, because in my neighborhood, someone would kick his ass if they new he had that going on.

insightful! thanks for keeping it real. being from philly it is nice to read a fresh take on the BIRDS! I can’t stand when a “guy” writes about a team that he obviously has a love affair with, but won’t admitt it. At least we admitt we love the Eagles, no matter what.

thumbs up for the red and blue flashing light. As for your articles- you are refreshing! I like it when someone it not afraid to say what they mean and yet put some humor into it. Tony Romo- you know he still isn’t sleeping thru the night- I loved your comment on him.
