Fearless Predictions for 2007
I know, I know, we’re already 10 days into 2007. But don’t worry, I’m not going to go the corny route and make predictions like the Eagles will beat the Giants, 23-20, in the playoffs or the Flyers will absorb a 6-2 defeat to the Capitals on January 9.
What I will do is group my predictions into simple categories. Here it goes.
Five obvious predictions for 2007:
- The Sixers will stink
- The Flyers will stink more
- The Phillies will fall just short of the playoffs
- The Eagles will carry the city through the winter
- No Philadelphia team will win a championship - again
Five not-so-obvious predictions for 2007:
- The Sixers will end up with the second pick in the NBA draft and take UNC forward Brandan Wright
- Villanova will win the NIT
- Cole Hamels will make the All-Star team
- Maurice Cheeks will be fired over the summer
- The Flyers will trade Robert Esche and Joni Pitkanen before the deadline
Five guys who will surprise in 2007:
- Shane Victorino
- Shavlik Randolph
- Hank Baskett
- Stefan Ruzicka
- Matt Smith
Five guys who will disappoint in 2007:
- Freddy Garcia
- Simon Gagne
- Rodney Carney
- Samuel Dalembert
- Tra Thomas
Five light-hearted predictions for 2007:
- In the wake of the motivational Vince Papale film “Invincible,” Chris Webber will star in the blockbuster hit “Untradeable”
- One day in August, Charlie Manuel will walk out to the mound, forget why he came out there, and return to the dugout
- Just as Wilt Chamberlain and Wayne Gretzky changed their respective sports forever, Pat Burrell will strike out 200 times and they will change the rules to four strikes and you’re out
- The Flyers will catch fire in March by winning three of their 15 games
- Andy Reid will clear his throat 84 times during his press conference Saturday, breaking the world record currently held by Reid, who cleared his throat 83 times after Sunday’s victory over the Giants
Five Philadelphia athletes who will make 2007 a year to remember:
- Ryan Howard
- Chase Utley
- Brian Westbrook
- Brian Dawkins
- Andre Iguodala
Five Philadelphia athletes who will make 2007 a year to forget:
- Derian Hatcher
- Mike Rathje
- Randy Jones
- Denis Gauthier
- Alexei Zhitnik
The beautiful part of predictions is their fleeting nature. If I’m wrong about my predictions, nobody will ever remember. But if I’m right, I can always throw it back on the site in 3 months that I called in January that Villanova would win the NIT.
Then again, maybe I’ll have the guts to revisit these predictions at the end of the year. Then again, maybe not.
