Sports… the Philadelphia way

Hey, The Birds Looked Good

Was that a different Eagles team? Or am I now in some alternative universe?

The Eagles looked good last night against the Panthers. Sure they made a few mistakes. But all in all, they looked good.

The defense looked tough. Real tough. They tackled hard. They stuffed the run. They created turnovers. They got the job done. True, they gave up a few too many big plays, but most of the time you could point to over-aggressiveness. I’ll take extreme-aggressiveness over the passive-footed defense from the last 6 weeks or so.

Garcia was the star of this game. Who really expected Garcia to come out and have a Donovan McNabb type performance? I hope I’m not the only one who noticed this, but I think Garcia might even be a bit more precise and a bit more consistent than D-Mac. Time will tell, I suppose. In any case, I eat my words from a couple weeks ago: Garcia looks to have been the right choice for QB.

How bout the receivers? Talk about turning it around overnight! I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen such a beautiful catch as Stallworth’s one handed grab while straddling the sideline. Stallworth was great all night, but so were Brown, Westbrook (great over the head catch down the sideline) and Greg Lewis. The guys held on to the ball, and that’s all that matters.

While I’m handing out props, let’s not forget to point out Buckhalter’s performance on each rare touch that he got. And what about that O-Line, protecting Garcia all night long against one of the best pass rush defenses in the league. Major kudos.

So what can we expect going forward? I suppose we shouldn’t make many assumptions off a single game. But they did look like a playoff team last night. They showed passion and intensity. They consistently moved the ball on offense. They shut down the run and did a decent job against one of the best receiver duos in the league. Ultimately, they made the least number of mistakes and won the game. That gives me reason to be hopeful for a cinderella story.
