Phillies Settle For Second Best
What a surprise. Here we are again. The Sixers are floating in mediocrity. The Flyers, well, they fired perhaps the best coach in the NHL. The Eagles…well, they just aren’t good anymore. They’re lacking in talent.
And what about the Phils? They just signed Adam Eaton to take them over the hump next year. Eaton? That’s right. He’s injury prone and has a mediocre ERA. It’s a case of the Phils failing to spend the money to acquire the big guns, and settling instead for second best.
Well, fans speculated since the off season as to what they needed to do to get over the hump and into the playoffs. There really was never a consensus. Some fans think the Phils needed a stud batter in the 5th spot behind Ryan “MVP” Howard. But then other fans pointed out that scoring was never the issue. The Phils needed pitching. Names were thrown around with Alfonso Soriano the consensus favorite for fans wanting a stud 5th batter.
Regardless of their decision (pitcher or 5 hole stud), the Phillies are perhaps in the most fertile position in all of Philadelphia sports. They could become a dominant NL team. They could win a couple championships over the next few years.
That should be on the top of their minds. Make the moves and spend the money that is necessary to win a championship.
Well, with Eaton our biggest off-season acquisition, it’s clear that management is not quite ready to take the next step. Unfortunately, if they don’t make some moves over the season or so, we could be in for another case of the classic Philadelphia pastime: squandered potential.
