Flyers Acquire Calder and Say So Long to Handzus
The Flyers have been one of the most inactive NHL teams in the offseason but they finally made a slightly big move today. They made a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks which involved C Kyle Calder coming to Philadelphia while C Michal Handzus is heading to the Windy City. Calder had 26 goals and 33 assists last year while Zeus had 11 goals and 33 assists for the Flyboys. Calder led the Blackhawks in goals, assists, points, and game-winning goals last year so it’s clear that Calder has tons of talent and will make an immediate impact for the Flyers.
In my opinion, I think this is a great trade for the Flyers because Calder has lots of ability and I think he is a notch above Zeus. As much as I love the heart that Handzus showed on the ice, I believe Calder will make a great fit here in Philadelphia. Handzus’ specialty was killing penalties so his presence on the PK will need to be addressed but Calder apparently possesses that ability.
“Calder is a player who we have coveted for a long time,” Flyers general manager Bob Clarke said in a statement. “He can score; he can kill penalties; he can play on any of our top three
lines.”
Dorny Calls it Quits: This year when the Flyers take the ice, Gary Dornhoefer will not give out the Chrysler Key’s to the Game since he has given up the mic and decided to retire. Replacing Dorny in the broadcast booth will be former Flyer Keith Jones who has a good personality and will do a fine job. The other broadcasting change will be that Coatesy will be rinkside doing interviews rather than up in the booth with Jim Jackson and Jonesy.
Other Philadelphia Sports Notes: Chase Utley’s hitting streak came to an unfortunate end at 35 during last night’s win over the New York Mets. With his smooth swing though, I don’t think it will be long before we see him go on another similar streak.
The Eagles and first round draft pick Brodrick Bunkley finally came to a 6 year contract agreement on Friday. Hopefully he will be able to make up for lost time during training camp.
