Brett Myers Returns to Philly but Phillies Lose in 9th

Brett MyersLast night marked the first night where Brett Myers was on the mound in Philadelphia since his incident with his wife in Boston. Myers took some much needed time off after he hit his wife on the streets of Boston before the All-Star break. He pitched pretty well last night amidst some boos and encouraging cheers from the Philly crowd. It appeared as if some Philly fans are willing to let Myers have a 2nd chance. He has already gotten that 2nd chance from his wife and his family so hopefully the Phillies fans can follow suit.He pitched 8 solid innings but had to leave in the 9th when the Phillies were down 2-1 and they eventually went on to lose 5-1 to the Atlanta Braves. Myers continues to be the best pitcher in the Phillies rotation as he gives the Fightins’ a chance to win every time he is out on the mound. With last night’s loss, the Phillies are now 4th in the NL East and are currently 13.5 games back so there only realistic chance at the playoffs is the Wild Card. That isn’t looking too bright either as they currently stand 6 games back of the Cincinnati Reds.

Bobby AbreuWith their playoff hopes dwindling, Phillies attention has swung to the trade deadline and all the rumors swirling around. First off, A-Rod is not coming to Philly. He has a no-trade clause and would immediately veto a trade to Philadelphia. As for the other rumors, I can very easily see Jon Lieber or Cory Lidle heading out of town to a playoff contender in need of some pitching help. I’d rather see Lidle get the boot because I think Lieber would have more value to our team than what we would receive in return for him via a trade. There are tons of rumors about Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell but I find it quite hard to believe that both or any of them will end up leaving town. Pat Burrell’s contract is way too high for another team to take on and the Phillies want alot in return for his assets. Abreu has the best chance of getting traded to a team such as the Yankees (Steinbrenner would love to see Abreu put on the pinstripes) but the problem lies in that Abreu has a large contract and the Yankees don’t have many good prospects on their farm system. We’ll see what Pat Gillick decides to do with this team before the July 31 trade deadline.
