76ers Draft Rodney Carney, Iverson Still on the Roster
The Sixers started the night off with the 13 pick but made a trade with the Chicago Bulls who had the 16 pick. The Sixers drafted Thabo Sefolosha from Switzerland at 13 then received 16 pick Rodney Carney, a 2007 2nd round pick, and cash from Da Bulls. I thought this was an excellent move by the 76ers since they got a good player in Carney as well as some extra benefits. Carney was good enough to be drafted at the 13 slot if the Sixers weren’t able to manufacture a trade to move down a couple slots. Unlike last year when the Sixers drafted a youngster in Louis Williams, the Sixers took a 22 year old college veteran from Memphis who can help this team this year.
This pick reminds me alot of the Andre Iguodala pick a few years ago. I just get a sense that Carney will be a solid contributor to the team and will be loved by the Philadelphia fans in a similar fashion to how Iguodala is. Carney has the ability to score 12-15 points a night a year from now I’d say so his potential should make Billy King and Maurice Cheeks happy.
The only possible problem that I have with drafting Carney is that it might not be the right pick if we end up trading Iverson. I feel that Billy King should have taken PG Marcus Williams if he plans on still trading AI because Williams was definitely the best point guard in the draft and Iverson must be replaced at some point. The combo of Willie Green, Andre Iguodala, Kyle Korver will be able to offset some of Iverson’s scoring at shooting guard when he leaves but who will replace him at point guard. Kevin Ollie? Think again. Louis Williams? Maybe in 2 years. So hopefully Billy has some sort of plan to find an adequate replacement for AI at the point without using draft picks. All in all though, I’m pleased with this draft result and I expect good results in the future from Carney.

I know a lotta folks are think’n Marcus Williams was the better move. And your point is valid ’bout the 1 guard. But you can on one hand the times a rookie point guards make the adjustment to the NBA year one (Williams ain’t MAGIC).
Rodney Carney was selected as the 2006 College All-Dunkadelic First Team and named the All-Dunkadelic Team MVP. Carney is just as explosive as Iguodala. The sixers should keep AI and play a Phoenix Suns style. Who would win a slam dunk contest between Carney and Iguodala just wail til November and judge for yourself.
