Brett Myers Makes Trip to Jail then Back to the Mound
The Phillies have more problems than just their current losing streak which is 3 wins out of the last 14 games. The new problem is Brett Myers domestic abuse problem that arose the other night in Boston. Myers was seen abusing his wife in public the night before his start against the Red Sox. He got out of jail when his wife posted 200 dollars bail but faces a court date in August to determine if he is guilty of abuse. Actions such as this cannot be condoned in any way, shape or form. Myers pleaded not guilty and had no comment on the issue when asked by reporters.
In baseball terms, this couldn’t be worse for the Phillies considering how well Myers has pitched this year and how poorly the rest of the staff has done. Fortunately for the pitching staff, Jon Lieber should be back on the mound within the week but that’s not saying much considering that Lieber hasn’t been the ace he was last year. Randy Wolf could make an appearance before the all-star break but that seems doubtful considering the major injury that he is returning from.
Back to Myers, this issue will continue to arise amongst the media and also his head when he is pitching. Since Myers has essentially been our number 1 thrower, this problem doesn’t bode well for the Phillies. I strongly believe that Myers must seek help to fix a problem like this and I hope an abuse instance never happens again. His first start after the issue wasn’t too bad as Myers allowed 3 runs on 7 hits with alot on his mind against a strong Red Sox squad. He was booed by the Boston crowd all game long and it was deserved to be frank.
