Philles Win Opener vs. Yanks as Bowa Returns to Philly

Larry Bowa returned to the city where he managed 2 years ago last night as a third base coach for the New York Yankees. Bowa’s new ball club was unable to beat his old squad as the Phils won 4-2. Brett Myers took the mound and outdueled opposing pitcher Randy Johnson for the victory. Myers pitched very well which has been just about the only consistency for the Phillies season thus far. The Phillies won last night’s game without using Ryan Howard and Bobby Abreu who were given the night off.

Hopefully last night’s game will give the team a boost of confidence because they Mets are continuing to run away with the NL East title and grabbing a wild card spot could prove to be very hard. And as we learned last year by losing a wild card spot on the final day, every game counts. The Phillies need to get off this skid and start playing up to their potential, especially the pitching staff.

As for Bowa’s return, it was nice to see him back in town and also good to see that he wasn’t booed by the entire crowd but rather got some applause. Bowa has tons of baseball knowledge and is perfectly suited for a third base coach position but being the manager doesn’t seem to fit Larry so I’m glad he landed in NY. Best of luck to Bowa in the future.

Tuesday Night Game Update: As I write this article, the Phillies are beating the Yanks 3-2 in the top of the 4th thanks to a 3 run home run by Ryan Howard. Hopefully they can pull this one out
