Team USA ties Italy, Mickelson Unable to Finish for US Open Victory
Weekend Recap
- Team USA took on powerhouse Italy for their second game of the World Cup. USA wouldn’t be mathematically eliminated if they lost or tied Italy thanks to Ghana’s win over the Czech Republic, but Team USA really faced no chance of advancing without beating or tying Italy on Saturday. The Americans looked like a much better squad then what was out on the field for their first game against the Czechs. Italy scored first on a beautiful goal but USA kept coming at the Italians. Team USA got their first goal of the tournament when one of their crosses was accidentally put in by an Italian defender. With the game notted up at 1-1, the referees then began making awful calls all over the field, mostly in favor of the Italians. The Americans lost 2 players to red cards which were completely undeserving but USA held on to tie Italy 1-1. They still have a chance of advancing if they beat Ghana and get a little outside help, mainly Italy beating the Czech Republic.
- The U.S. Open took a ton of surprising turns during yesterday’s final round. With 2 holes to go, Phil Mickelson looked like a lock for the title but he made several mistakes on the 18th hole which cost him the major. Geoff Ogilivy was the winner at 5 over par which is a testament to how incredibly difficult the course and its conditions were. Congrats to the young man and hopefully Phil can learn from his late round errors.
Some Quick Philly Sports Notes
- The Phillies got demolished pretty much all weekend and had a 6 game losing streak until they won Sunday’s game vs. the Devil Rays. Charlie Manuel needs to figure out real quick how to jumpstart this team or he will be saying his goodbyes very soon.
- The Flyers signed an ex-player in C Marty Murray. He spent last year in Europe but he showed tons of heart when he was in a Flyers uni a few years ago. I think this was a very good signing since Murray can be a versatile solid 4th line center.
- The Eagles signed 2 of their draft picks, Omar Gauthier and LaJuan Ramsey, but still have to get their best young players signed to deals. Hopefully Brodrick Bunkley will be signed in time for training camp because he looks to be a major factor in this team’s success this year.
