Eagles Ink Andrews to 7 Year Extension

On the day that the Steelers lost their franchise quarterback for an indefinite amount of time to a motorcycle accident, the Eagles signed one of their bright young stars to a contract extension. Shawn Andrews has shown enough promise to the Eagles front office during his first 2 years at guard. And his rookie year was nonexistent thanks to a major injury but he was simply stellar at guard last year and was selected as a Pro Bowl alternate.

Andrews was the 16th pick in the 2004 NFL Draft and was the 2nd OL taken that year after Robert Gallery. It’s arguable that Andrews was just as good if not better than Gallery last year. Andrews looks like he also has lots of room for improvement and he will probably move to tackle to replace Jon Runyan or William (no longer Tra) Thomas. Speaking of William Thomas, I found it a little odd that Tra changed his name back to William after all these years. I’m most likely going to be quite disappointed with this name change because there will be holding and false start penalties on William Thomas and that will only remind me of what a great player the old LB William Thomas used to be.

Back to Andrews, this 7 year extension is a typical roster move by the Eagles who have proven to be one of the best front offices in the business. The Eagles sign their best young players to contract extensions generally 2-3 years into their rookie deals when they recognize they are the players of the future. Case in point include CB Sheldon Brown, CB Lito Sheppard, and SS Michael Lewis. This has turned out to be a good strategy and the ball club has improved because of contract extensions such as these.
