Sports… the Philadelphia way

Phillies Win Rain Shortened Game, Rowand makes Unbelieveable Catch

The Mets and Phillies were unable to complete the entire game last night, but they did play 5 innings which was enough to give the Phillies an official 2-0 victory. In route to their win, the Phillies witnessed one of the greatest catches in their history. In the top of the first inning with the bases loaded, Xavier Nady hit a long shot to deep center that would have been a 2-3 run triple had Rowand not made an amazing catch. Here’s the video of the spectacular grab.

Unfortunately that great catch had it’s consequences as Rowand broke his nose, which means he will be out for a while according to Charlie Manuel. Manuel also had this to say about the grab.

“As far as effort and determination, that ranks as good as any I’ve ever seen,” Manuel said. “I’ve seen guys make great plays, but he wanted to catch that ball.”

It’s a shame that he will miss some time because of this but Phillies fans won’t soon forget the sacrifice he made to catch that ball. Expect a huge ovation when Rowand returns to the field in Philadelphia.

As for the game, Chase Utley hit a solo home run in the 1st inning, and then David Bell knocked in Shane Victorino in the 4th. The game was called after the 5th inning due to the rain, with the Phillies recording a win. Today’s game in Cincinnati features the debut of Cole Hamels in the major leagues. Hamels will be facing a surprisingly good Reds team who are tied with the White Sox for most wins in the league with 23 so far.

Flyers Notes: Almost all of the Flyers have gone in for surgery after the season ended, but most of the surgeries will heal within the 4-6 week range. Unfortunately that’s not the case for Peter Forsberg, who is going to have surgery on both of his ankles. The surgeries will be separate so that Forsberg will be able to limp around rather than not being able to move at all.

“When I come back, I will be a better player,” Forsberg said. “I have to get this done. I didn’t want it to happen. I know I can be better than I was.”

Due to these surgeries, Forsberg will miss half of the season and be out most likely till January. This is a huge hit to the Flyers team and just makes Bob Clarke’s offseason moves that much more interesting.
