Sports… the Philadelphia way

Bonds Comes to Town, But Phillies Come Away with Win

One of baseball’s biggest star came into Philadelphia last night among tons of controversy. Barry Bonds entered the city of Brotherly Love but he didn’t exactly get a good taste of that. Bonds was booed consistently all night by the Philadelphia crowd. Personally, I’m not a fan of Bonds now that it’s almost guaranteed he used steroids during his career so I think the treatment he received from Philly ws plenty justified. My favorite moment last night occurred when Chase Utley hit a solo HR in the 2nd inning, to which Phillies fans started yelling “He’s a natural, He’s a natural.”

Bonds saw signs left and right which I’m sure he noticed during the game. Most were signs with asterisks or some with catch phrases such as “Ruth Did It on Hot Dogs and Beer.” Let’s face it, Bonds isn’t a Philly guy. He allegedly took steroids to enhance his ability and Phillies fans are blue collar people who love hard nosed players who give their heart and body for the city. Players such as Lenny Dysktra, Darren Daulton, Jim Thome, Mike Schmidt are the epitome of Philadelphia sports so it’s not hard to see why Bonds will never be well liked in this city.

As for the game itself, it essentially was a home run derby, but Bonds wasn’t an entrant. Chase Utley and Ryan Howard both had 2 home runs by the end of the 4th inning. Aaron Rowand added a HR in the 7th to cap off the night which ended with a 8-3 victory. Rowand is really turning into a solid player for the Phillies and is making that Jim Thome trade look fine, no matter how good Thome does out in Chicago (which is very good by the way). I thought Gavin Floyd pitched a good game but I still feel he is a major work in process and he struggles with consistency. In my opinion, the Phillies need to bring Cole Hamels up real soon in order to spice up the team atmosphere as well as invigorate the crowd.

Of course most of the guys on that list probably took steroids at some point in their careers (Lenny Dysktra, Darren Daulton, Jim Thome, Mike Schmidt). I think the point was that they weren’t cry babies like Bonds.

I was at the game last night and found the crowd a bit hypocritical. Each person who mocked Bonds was there to see him tie or pass Ruth’s record.

Which is it? Is he the cheater you all claim, or is he a record setter?
