Flyers fall down 2 goals, Forsberg, Esche and Crowd Lead Comeback Win
I don’t know about you, but when the Flyers fell down by 2 goals in the 1st period of play, I thought the season was clearly over. I was quite dismayed, sad or whatever. But the Philadelphia crowd didn’t let up and neither did Peter Forsberg who ended up being involved in 3 of the 5 Flyers goals.
On the first comeback goal, Forsberg skated around and through the Sabres defense, they collapsed on him, and Forsberg sent a beautiful pass to Desjardins for a wide open slap shot. Seeing Forsberg do his thing is a joy to watch, and we should be thankful to have this guy in Philly.
Speaking of Desjardins, I felt bad for him when he slid into goalie Robert Esche, forcing Esche and the puck into the net and effectively giving the Sabres their second goal. It didn’t seem like anything more could go wrong for this team at that point.
But then things turned around thanks to stellar goaltending from Esche (he stonewalled a penalty shot), superstar play from Forsberg (2 goals and an assist), and even a freak goal from Umberger who slid one past Miller.
Brashear was pulled from the lineup for the third straight game, mostly because he doesn’t have the quickness to keep up with the Sabres.
The one down note of the night was when the Flyers, who had a 5-3 lead, gave the Sabres a shorthanded goal with less than a minute to go. That made the game closer than it needed to be, and actually made Forsberg’s empty net goal from only seconds earlier the winning goal.
