Weekend Recap
- The Masters finished play on Sunday with Phil Mickelson taking home his 2nd green jacket. Mickelson played well down the stretch run of the tournament while Fred Couples and Tiger Woods were unable to capitalize on their opportunites to catch up to Phil. Couples three putted from about 4 feet which ruined his mindset and he also missed other makeable putts during the final round. Woods also struggled with the putter and couldn’t make his short eagle putt on 13 or his short eagle putt on 15. Mickelson on the other hand took advantage of the par 5’s and eventually won the Masters at -7, 2 shots ahead of runner-up Tim Clark who holed out from the 18th greenside bunker to grab sole possession of 2nd place.
Let’s take a quick look back at my Masters predictions. I picked Tiger, Vijay, and Retief as my top contenders.
Retief Goosen - Yes, I know that I didn’t choose Phil Mickelson and it will probably come back to haunt me but I think Augusta sets up very well for Mr. Goosen. Mickelson played great last week and won the BellSouth by 13 strokes and I can’t imagine 2 straight weeks of such dominance.

Possible Busts: Florida, Arizona - Florida got off to a 17-0 start but suffered key losses to Tennessee and Alabama.
Now you know to always go against my predictions, so if I say Ernie Els will struggle then I would recommend calling up your bookie and bet your life savings on Ernie Els.
- The Phillies finished their opening 6 game homestand on Sunday with a doubleheader due to a rainout on Saturday. The Phils won the afternoon game 6-3 thanks to a Bobby Abreu 3-run walkoff home run. Ryan Madson pitched well and had the longest outing of the season for a Phillies starting pitcher by going 6 innings. Unfortunately for the Phillies, they had to play another game. The Dodgers won the night game 6-2 so the Phillies ended the day with a 1-5 season record. Lieber pitched okay in his 2nd outing but was outpitched by Dodgers’ ace Brad Benny and fell to 0-2. This team needs to put it together before they go on a huge slide.
- The Flyers had a good start to the weekend with a 4-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night. Esche was in net and the Flyers looked like the better team out on the ice. The Sabres are the most likely 1st round opponent so this was a good measuring point for the Flyers. However, the Flyers were unable to continue their success when they took on Toronto the next night. The Flyers allowed 5 power play goals and lost 5-2 to the Maple Leafs. That’s the 2nd time in 2 weeks that the Flyers have lost to Toronto, who most likely will miss the playoffs. The Flyers simply cannot lose games to non-playoff teams at this point in the season.
- In other news, Temple has found a successor for their basketball program and John Chaney. Temple announced that they will hire Fran Dunphy, the coach of the Penn Quakers basketball team. It will be hard to replace Chaney but I think hiring Dunphy was a great choice. Dunphy is a local Philly guy and should be well liked by Temple fans.

Kyle,
I’d venture to say that my predictions are probably even worse than yours. Maybe we’ll have to have a competition to see who makes the worst, best-shot predictions!
