The Masters – Who Could Bring Home the Green Jacket

The most notable golf tournament in the world, The Masters, begins play on Thursday morning. Set at one of the top 5 best courses in the United States, this major never seems to disappoint. Augusta National is a golf course so beautiful that one must see in person at one point during their lifetime even if they don’t enjoy golf. This year’s tournament has a great field consisting of many elite players and some unknown contenders. So here’s a list of my top 3 notable contenders and 3 darkhorse picks to put on the Green Jacket on Sunday night.

Top 3 Contenders
1. Tiger Woods – Shocker, huh? Tiger is simply the best player in the world if he is playing at his best. Other players can compete with him but he is unbeatable when he gets going. Last year, Tiger won the Masters in a playoff against Chris DiMarco and he will surely contend for the title yet again this year.

2. Vijay Singh – In the last 4 years at the Masters, Vijay Singh has finished in the top 10 every year. The way Vijay has been playing as of late, I think a 5th consecutive top 10 wouldn’t be too much of stretch and maybe he could grab his 2nd green jacket.

3. Retief Goosen – Yes, I know that I didn’t choose Phil Mickelson and it will probably come back to haunt me but I think Augusta sets up very well for Mr. Goosen. Mickelson played great last week and won the BellSouth by 13 strokes and I can’t imagine 2 straight weeks of such dominance. Goosen finished 3rd last year and has great ball striking ability.

3 Darkhorse Picks to be on the Lookout for
1. Zach Johnson – Johnson is a solid young player that has lots of potential to become one of golf’s elite players. He finished 2nd last week and is currently 15th on the PGA Tour Money List.

2. Luke Donald – One of Europe’s finest young players. Donald finished 3rd at last year’s Masters and hopes to improve on that mark.

3. Jose Maria Olazabal – Another European who could possibly make some noise in Augusta if he hits a groove. Olazabal has won the Masters twice, and has played sparingly good at parts of this season.

Anyone have predictions for this year’s Masters?

Obviously the Masters is the sickest thing in the world. My prediction for the win is none other than Shigeki Maruyama. Great smile, fantastic style, and superb ball hitting ability gives this asian my pick.
