March Madness - Sweet Sixteen Recap

The action of the Sweet Sixteen games started off with a slight shocker. LSU outplayed Duke to advance to the Elite Eight. Duke was unable to match LSU’s intensity and lost 62-54. This was the second straight year where Duke was unable to advance into the Elite 8.

The 2nd game featured possible cinderellas Bradley taking on 1 seed Memphis. Memphis proved they were the better team and won 80-64.

The third game of the first night involved West Virginia and Texas. This game went down to the wire and had an excellent ending (if you had Texas in your bracket). With about 9 seconds left, WVU was down 3 and came down the court and Kevin Pittsnogle hit a 3 pointer from the top of the arch to tie it up. Texas inbounded the ball without calling a timeout and went down the court and Kenton Paulino hit the game-winning 3-pointer as time expired.

The final game of the first night also went down to the very end. Gonzaga was up 37-20 at halftime over UCLA, but the Bruins gradually got themselves back into the game and were within 1 with less than 15 seconds. UCLA stole the ball with about 7 seconds left and hit the game-winning layup. Gonzaga was unable to score as time expired which meant the likely end of Adam Morrison’s career at Gonzaga.

Friday’s action started off with Villanova versus Boston College. BC and Nova both played a good game and this game lived up to the pre-game hype. The game went into OT tied up at 51-51, and Nova was able to outscore BC 9-8 in the overtime period to head to the Elite Eight.

The 2nd game featured a rematch of Wichita State - George Mason from the regular season. George Mason won their previous matchup from the regular season at Wich. State. George Mason was able to repeat that performance and defeated Wich. St. 63-55.

Georgetown took on Florida for the third game of the second night. Georgetown was unable to overcome Florida and went down 57-54.

The last game of the Sweet Sixteen was between Washington and UConn. This game turned out to be a high scoring duel that eventually went to OT tied up at 82-82. UConn was able to outlast Washington in overtime and was the last team to advance to the Elite Eight.
