March Madness - Day 2 Recap
The 2nd day of the tournament started off with a 2-15 seed matchup between Ohio State and Davidson. Ohio St. controlled the game after a weak 1st half and grabbed a 70-62 victory.
The biggest upset of the tourney so far happened on the 2nd game of the 2nd day when 3 seed Iowa took on 14 seed Northwestern State. Northwestern St. played well in the 2nd half and was down 2 with 5 seconds to go. That was until Jermaine Wallace took a 3 point shot from the corner and nailed it to give Northwestern the upset victory over Iowa.
Last year’s cinderella story, Bucknell, played Arkansas but this time Bucknell wasn’t exactly an underdog. Bucknell took down Arkansas 59-55 to advance to the 2nd round.
Wisconsin versus Arizona turned out to be a blowout as Arizona controlled the action and came away with a 94-75 victory.
The Georgetown - Northern Iowa matchup proved to be a great game that went down to the wire. Georgetown came away with a 54-49 win in a low scoring game.
West Virginia took on the Salukis of Southern Illinois but WVU’s offense was too much for SIU. America’s best name, Kevin Pittsnogle, had 18 points and West Virginia won 64-46.
Number 1 seed Memphis played Oral Roberts and there was a chance of an upset until Memphis found their game. Memphis eventually won 94-78 but you gotta give credit to Oral Roberts for giving them a game for a while.
Another 1 seed, Villanova, didn’t play their best but found a way to come away with a W as they beat Monmouth by a final score of 58-45. Allan Ray looked good in his first game action since his scary eye injury in the Big East tournament.
Pittsburgh got matched up with Kent State but Pitt played well and took home a 79-64 victory.
In one of the most intriguing games of the day, UConn took on 16 seed Albany. Albany wasn’t scared of the Huskies and gave them all they could. Albany was up 50-38 with 12 minutes to go in the 2nd half and were closing in on history (No 16 seed has ever beaten a Number 1 seed). But then UConn turned it on and put up a 20-4 run and eventually won 72-59.
Another big upset occured when 14 seed Bradley beat 3 seed Kansas 77-73. You think Kansas is missing Coach Roy Williams now?
Roy Williams’ new team, UNC, played Murray State and UNC was able to avoid an upset and grabbed a 69-65 victory.
The Penn Quakers went out to Dallas to take on the Texas Longhorns. The Quakers gave Texas a game but was unable to bring home a win as Texas won 60-52.
The final game of the day featured Kentucky taking on UAB. Bobby Perry’s 25 point performance for Kentucky helped the Wildcats advance to the 2nd round with a 69-64 win.
