March Madness - Day 1 Recap

The first day of March Madness didn’t disappoint to say the least. The games started off with the Seton Hall-Wichita State matchup. Wichita St. controlled this game from the tip off and won by 20 with the final score 86-66.

Next up, 6 seed Oklahoma took on a possible cinderella story in Wisc-Milwaukee. Just like last year, UW-Milw pulled off the first round upset by beating Oklahoma 82-74.

The best game of the day occured three games in with Boston College taking on Pacific. Pacific made this a game and almost won it in regulation but BC made 2 clutch free throws to put it into overtime. BC was finally able to take down Pacific in the 2nd overtime by outscoring Pacific 14-2.

Florida got matched up against with South Alabama and was able to cruise to a 76-50 victory and advance to take on Wisc-Milwaukee in the 2nd round.

In a high scoring duel, Alabama and Marquette provided some solid entertainment as ‘Bama won 90-85.

Later, Number 2 seed Tennessee played the 15th seeded Winthrop Eagles. The Volunteers almost bowed out to Winthrop but Tennessee hit a big jumper with 3 seconds left to send them onto the 2nd round.

In one of the those 5-12 matchups that everyone loves to pick upsets with, 12 seed Montana beat Nevada 87-79 to keep the tradition going.

UCLA took on Belmont with ease and won 78-44.

Another great game featured George Washington playing UNC-Wilmington. This game also went into overtime and GW pulled out the W with a final score of 88-85.

LSU got off to a slow start versus Iona but was able to step up to the plate and won 80-64 thanks to a 48 point performance in the 2nd half.

Gonzaga got an early scare from Xavier but grabbed the 79-75 victory due to Adam Morrison’s 35 point game.

Illinois took on a solid Air Force team but the Fightin’ Illini were able to come out with a 78-69 win.

One of my favorite potential cinderella stories, San Diego State, was matched up with Indiana. SD State was unable to outlast Indiana at the end of the game and was defeated 87-83 by the Hoosiers.

Duke took on Southern in the first round and cruised to another win as Redick and Sheldon Williams both had 29 points.

Syracuse played Texas A&M and yet again bowed out in the first round of the tournament just like last year.

The final game of the night featured 5 seed Washington versus 12 seed Utah State. This time the 5 seed was able to prove its seed and won 75-61.
