Why Can’t Philly Get Excited About Nova?
Enrico over at The700Level makes a good point: Philly’s response to Villanova’s top 5 basketball team is lukewarm at best.
I for one haven’t gotten into Nova this year and I’m not quite sure why. If it was St. Joe’s or Temple, I would have been the first one on the bandwagon. In fact, there was a point this season when it seemed like Temple was about to turn it around and make a run at the tournament. I started to get excited. More excited than I’ve gotten about Nova.
There doesn’t seem to be a great reason either. Maybe it has to do with their poster boy coach. Or maybe it has to do with the fact that expectations were already so high (Philly likes surprises like the 93 Phils or the 2001 Sixers). Maybe its because Philly prefers underdogs. But that wouldn’t make complete sense, because we surely got behind the Eagles last year, even when they were dominant. Then again maybe the Eagles are completely different story altogether.
Are we just waiting for the tournament to turn up the tempo?
I don’t know. It seems wierd. We’ve gotta a college team that has a legitimate chance at making it to the final four, and we’re sort of just sitting back without passion. I’ve heard some people speculate that the Eagles SuperBowl loss knocked the wind out of Philly - that the crash was too great. That the recovery is going to take more than a couple years. Maybe that also partially explains poor attendance at the Sixers games…
Any thoughts?
