Prospects for the Sixers

What are the prospects for the Sixers this year? High expectations? Low, apocalyptic doom?

Let’s look at the facts. In two games, the Sixers have shown one thing clearly: they can’t play defense. That’s a huge problem in the NBA. The return of Dalembert might help on this end. But I wonder if Dalembert can single handedly reduce the other team’s score by 15pts a game?

Another fact: the Sixers aren’t spreading the ball around enough. Neither Korver or Iguodala are getting the shots to justify their starting position. If Korver’s not going to get shots, then he sure as hell shouldn’t be out on the floor since he can’t play D.

Another fact: Webber can’t jump and he’s still slow. Despite his high scoring performance against the Bucks, Webber still looks like he’s going to be unpredictable on a night-in and night-out basis. This probably has a little to do with the second point above: that he can’t rely on Iverson to distribute the ball consistently.

The last fact: So long as Iveson dominates the first and second option on offense, and he is, the other Sixers players are being wasted. In fact, as the season moves on, it makes the Sixers offense one-dimensional, just like the current Eagles’ offense. If teams know they can take focus their energies on Iverson, and if the other players haven’t gotten into a consistent groove, then teams will be able to shut down the Sixers. And since they can’t play defense… they won’t be able to compete in the offensive shoot-outs.

Long story short: unless Iverson becomes a team player, and intentionally involves the other players on a consistent basis, and unless the Sixers can beef up their defense, this is going to be another long season.
