Eagles-Broncos Preview
Prediction: Broncos 23 – Eagles 17
So Andy Reid says he’s going to run more? Against the Broncos? Did you know that the Broncos have the 5th best rushing defense in the NFL? Yet they have the 26th WORST pass defense?
Did you know that Andy Reid likes to play to his strengths and against his opponents weaknesses? If you knew those things…then you won’t be surprised to find out that the Eagles will, once again, PASS, PASS and PASS some more. There’s no quesiton.
Don’t expect Mr. Reid to play into the demands of the fans or the media.
Ok. So with that being said, can the Eagles actually put together scoring drives by relying on the pass? Their season, so far, tells us a resounding NO. McNabb is too erratic. He made a mistake to play through his injury. They aren’t spreading the ball around to they’re multitude of weapons (remember in preaseason how McNabb would hit Reggie Brown, then Terrell Owens and then Greg Lewis and then LJ Smith and then Westbrook?). They have no deep ball threat. They have no running threat. They aren’t using their stars with enough frequency (Westbrook and Owens). I don’t see things changing this week.
I see the Eagles losing this game because of poor offensive performance. However, I’m not going to let the defense off the hook. Think about it. What didn’t San Diego do that all the other teams who’ve run on the Eagles have done? They didn’t do enough counters and cut-backs to throw off a defense that overpursues. Denver knows how to exploit teams with the run. Expect the Eagles D to bend almost to the point of breaking against the Denver rushing attack.
In the end, the Eagles can’t expect victories like last week’s to occur more than once a decade. Denver’s only major weakness is at pass defense, but the Eagles just can’t get a good pass game going. I don’t expect them to be able to exploit Denver in the way needed for a win. In fact, I fully expect McNabb to overthrow another three or four touchdown passes to wide-open receivers.
