The Hunt for Red October
The Phillies continue to stay competitive down the stretch, having won 6 of their last 8 games against high-caliber teams such as the Marlins and Braves. They currently find themselves just 1/2 game out of the wildcard race (behind Houston) but only 5 games out of the NL East. That may seem like too big a hurdle to climb, but the Braves have been performing lately as of late, while the Phils have been on a hot streak.
While I was just as ready to throw in the towl a few weeks ago as anyone when they got swept by Houston, their resiliency and ability to bounce back shows a lot of character…character that this team hasn’t possessed in many, many years. I’m not ready to say that they’ll get into the playoffs, but if they keep playing their asses off we may just be looking at a Red October. Phillies in the playoffs? Could be. And it would be the first time in 12 years.
The final 14 games for the Phils turn out to be a good set of games. Sure, Houston has the easier schedule. But the Phils seem to be playing their best ball against the teams they face down the stretch.
As much as I hate the management and as hard as it is for me to love most of these players, and as much as this is a BirdTown, I’m sorta getting all jiggly with excitement about the prospects of a cinderalla story from Philly.
