Phillies on Two Game Losing Streak, Barely Holding on to Wildcard Lead
The Philadelphia Phillies have failed to take advantage of an opportunity to buffer their wildcard lead, losing two straight to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the process, they’ve lost a lot of ground in the chase of the National League East title. Right now, they are .5 games up in the wildcard chase and 4.5 games behind the Braves in the NL East.
The problem is that Arizona is a losing team. They have a losing record and are well under .500. The Phillies should be winning these kinds of series. But they are not. They’re getting shutout or they’re getting beat by five runs. That doesn’t bode well going down the stretch. In fact, the last few series should have been the Phillies chance to break away from the pack. Failure to take advantage of these past few weeks may come back to haunt the Phils unless they can pick it up against their main rivals.
