Phillies Maintain Wildcard Lead By Crushing Arizona
The Philadelphia Phillies were able to maintain a 1.5 game cushion in the NL wildcard race by rocking the Arizona Diamondbacks, 11-3. Fueled by a grand slam by Bobby Abreu (off Worrell, no less) and a six run seventh inning, the Phillies continued to show that they can pour it on with offense. They need to use these final 30 or so games to keep that kind of offense consistent.
Uncle Charlie finally found a way to get Jason Michaels into the lineup. He and Kenny Lofton are the only two guys batting over .300 right now. So why not play them more often?
Chase Utley had a solid night going 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs. In fact, seven of the nine starters (everyone but Burrell and Myers) had nits in this one. It was a total team effort.
The only real negative of the game was Myers pitching. He had to leave after 4 innings, giving up three runs and four walks. Hopefully he’ll bounce back as our ace pitcher down the stretch. Nonetheless, the bullpen came to play and did a superb job closing it out.
