Phillies Phall To Pirates, Lose ground in wildcard race

The Phills lost *bad* to the Pirates last night, 11-2, and fell a half game back in the wildcard race. Right now its a dead heat between the Phillies, Washington, Florida and Houston. The Marlins are on a streak, so they may be the most dangerous in the coming days. Houston is probably the best team of the four, but they’ve been shaky over the past couple weeks.

The Phillies need to take advantage of the next two series against sub-500 teams (Pirates and Giants). At the very least, they need to win each series. They didn’t get off to a good start against the lowly Pirates, though.

In their last 39 games, the Phillies face Washington six times, Atlanta seven times, Florida six times and Houston three times. Over half of their remaning games are against teams competing either for the wildcard or division. These are not going to be easy games. However, the Phillies will certainly have a chance to prove themselves down the stretch and their success (or lack thereof) certainly has the potential to rev-up their momentum heading into the playoffs.
