If they hadn’t been swept by Houston…
…the Phillies would currently be *at least* tied for the wildcard position. That’s remarkable. It’s helped that the Nats are in a tailspin.
But here’s something to meditate on…the Phillies have been doing great against the crappy teams and not so great against the good teams. That spells mediocrity. Even if they are in the wildcard hunt, it’s not because they’ve looked good. It’s because other teams have been losing, and they’ve been facing enough crappy teams to maintain their mediocre record. The Phils need to step it up or else, well… we’ll be saying goodbye to another mediocre season.
I’m not willing to write the Phillies off completely. But I’ve gotta say what I see: they don’t look like a team that could win in the playoffs. They just don’t. Let them change my mind…I want it to be changed. But I’m not holding my breath.

The past few years, it’s been the opposite: they were good against the good teams, and crappy against the Brewers and Rockies of the league. This year, it’s all upside down, and I don’t know what to think.
My naturally Philly pessimism tells me that Wade should sell this weekend, whereas in years past I’d complain that he wasn’t buying.
Watch him surprise me and do nothing, and the Phils make the playoffs.
Michael, good point. I wonder what to read into this. I think I’d rather them beat the good teams because that way they’d be showing that A) they have the talent and B) they can step it up and play with the big guys. If they are only beating the bad teams, then I’m not sure how to read any positive sign from this, outside of the fact that things are different.
I wonder what things were like in 93. Were they beating the good teams, the crappy teams, or both?
